USA Student Visa Cost from Bangladesh: SEVIS, MRV, and the I-20 Math

The F-1 visa's own fees are small. The number that decides your file is printed on the I-20, and it is the one students read last.

Strip away the mythology and the US F-1 visa has exactly two fees: the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 and the MRV application fee of USD 185. Together about ৳63,000. That is less than the UK charges and a quarter of what Australia charges. So why does everyone call the American route expensive? Because the visa is cheap and the education is not, and the visa file forces you to prove you can pay for the education. The number that matters is printed in the financials section of your I-20.

The two fees, precisely

  • SEVIS I-901 fee: USD 350 (about ৳41,000), paid online at fmjfee.com after you receive the I-20. Keep the receipt; the interview requires it
  • MRV (visa application) fee: USD 185 (about ৳22,000), paid through the designated bank channel in Bangladesh before booking the interview

Both figures change occasionally, so verify on travel.state.gov and fmjfee.com when you apply. Neither is refundable. There is no biometrics fee, no health surcharge, and no mandatory pre-departure medical for F-1, which genuinely surprises students coming from the UK or Australian process.

The I-20 number

Your I-20 states the total cost of attendance for one academic year: tuition, fees, living expenses, sometimes books and insurance. For a public university that might read USD 32,000; for a private one, USD 60,000 or more. Your financial evidence at the interview must cover at least that number. Scholarships and assistantships printed on the I-20 reduce it directly, which is why a funded admit changes the whole visa conversation. In BDT terms, most Bangladeshi F-1 files show between ৳35L and ৳70L.

What the Dhaka interview actually weighs

The officer has your DS-160 and I-20 on screen and about three minutes of conversation. Money comes up as a credibility question, not an accounting one. Who is paying? What does your father do? Why this university? A student who answers in specifics (a named sponsor, a real business, a program-fit reason) clears; a student reciting a memorized paragraph stalls. The bank documents themselves are often not even opened. They exist so your answers can survive a follow-up question.

Budget beyond the visa: the flight (৳1.1L to ৳1.8L one way), initial housing deposit, and the first month's living costs before any on-campus job starts paying. Most students carry USD 2,000 to 3,000 for the landing period. Run your full first-year numbers in our calculator at /student-visa-bank-solvency-calculator/.

Where the money actually goes

Fee-wise, the US route costs about ৳63,000 plus a ৳25,000 English test. Everything else is education cost, and that is where planning pays. In-state-equivalent public universities, graduate assistantships that waive tuition, and STEM programs with funded research positions can drop the real cost below what a UK one-year master's charges. The students who spend ৳70L and the students who spend ৳20L applied to the same country. They just applied differently.

Frequently asked questions

The visa itself: USD 350 SEVIS fee plus USD 185 MRV fee, about ৳63,000 combined, plus an English test around ৳25,000. There is no health surcharge, no biometrics fee, and no mandatory medical for F-1. The substantial requirement is evidence: funds covering the first-year total printed on your I-20, typically ৳35L to ৳70L depending on the university, shown through bank documents and a credible sponsor story at the Dhaka interview.
