Why this country

Why Bangladeshi students choose Hungary

Popular subjects include Engineering, Computer Science, Business & MBA, Nursing & Health.

Stipendium Hungaricum covers full tuition, a monthly stipend, housing support, and health insurance, and Bangladesh holds a bilateral quota of well over a hundred places per year

Self-funded tuition of €3,000 to €8,000 per year is among the lowest in the EU

Living costs of €400 to €600 per month outside Budapest undercut nearly all of Western Europe

Hungarian degrees (Semmelweis medicine, BME engineering) carry solid EU-wide recognition

Students may work 24 hours per week during term, more than most EU countries allow

A 9-month post-study job search permit follows graduation

Admission

University admission process

Understand the admission path before you start the visa process.

Admission requirements

  • HSC for bachelor's; a relevant bachelor's degree for master's
  • IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 depending on university — several accept an online interview or MOI letter instead
  • Motivation letter; SH additionally requires a medical certificate
  • Entrance interview or exam at most universities
  • For SH: nomination through the sending-partner process in Bangladesh
1

Decide: SH track or self-funded

The Stipendium Hungaricum application runs through its own portal with a mid-January deadline. Self-funded applicants apply directly to universities, mostly by spring.

2

Apply on the SH portal (if SH)

Pick up to two programs, upload transcripts, motivation letter, and medical certificate, and nominate through the Bangladesh Ministry of Education as the sending partner.

3

Sit the entrance interview or exam

Most Hungarian universities test applicants online — usually a subject interview, sometimes a written test — between February and April.

4

Receive the decision

SH results arrive around June. Self-funded offers come faster, usually 3 to 6 weeks after the university interview.

5

Start the residence permit file

With the admission letter (and SH award letter if funded), open the residence permit application at the Hungarian mission handling Bangladesh.

First year planning range

৳10L to ৳18L for the first year (self-funded); near zero with Stipendium Hungaricum

Full masters degree

৳20L to ৳36L for a two year masters (self-funded)

Hungarian master's programs run 1.5 to 2 years, bachelor's 3 to 4, and medicine 6. The calculation that matters is the SH one: a funded student pays no tuition, receives a monthly stipend of about HUF 43,700 (more for doctoral students), gets housing support, and holds full health coverage. The realistic plan for most Bangladeshi applicants is to apply for SH in January and hold self-funded Poland or Malta as the fallback.

Visa process

Student visa process step by step

From admission letter to the final decision for the Residence Permit for Studies.

1

Gather the admission and award letters

The university admission letter, plus the SH award letter if funded, anchor the residence permit file.

2

Apply at the Hungarian mission

Submit the residence permit application at the Hungarian mission currently serving Bangladesh. The handling channel has changed in recent years, so verify on the consular website before booking travel or appointments.

3

Show accommodation and funds

Provide a dorm confirmation or rental contract and, for self-funded applicants, bank statements covering tuition and roughly €500 per month.

4

Attend the consular interview

Expect direct questions about your program, city, funding, and study plan. Weak answers here, more than paperwork, sink Bangladeshi applications.

5

Collect the permit and register after arrival

Decisions typically take 4 to 8 weeks. After arriving, register your address and collect the residence card from the immigration office.

Insurance requirement

Health insurance is required for the residence permit. Stipendium Hungaricum scholars receive coverage as part of the award; self-funded students buy a policy (roughly €150 to €250 per year) or enroll in the Hungarian social insurance scheme after arrival.

Visa appointment guidance

Hungary's consular handling of Bangladesh has moved between Dhaka and regional missions in recent years, so check the Hungarian consular services website for the current submission point before you plan anything. The consular interview is a real filter: applicants who cannot explain their program choice or funding coherently get refused regardless of documents.

Proof of funds

Self-funded applicants show bank statements covering first-year tuition plus roughly €500 per month of living cost, with the usual expectations of seasoning and a documented source. SH scholars carry the award letter, which covers tuition, stipend, and insurance, and effectively settles the financial question. There is no fixed published formula, so a generous, well-documented file beats a minimal one.

Documents

Document checklist

Your document set changes with degree level, funding type, and profile. Use this as a planning base.

Academic documents

  • Transcripts and certificates
  • English evidence or interview record
  • Motivation letter

Personal documents

  • Valid passport
  • Photos to Schengen spec
  • Medical certificate (SH requirement, useful in the visa file too)

Financial documents

  • Self-funded: bank statements covering tuition plus about €500/month
  • SH scholars: the award letter replaces most financial evidence

Sponsor documents

  • Sponsor declaration and statements where a parent funds a self-financed file

University documents

  • Admission letter
  • SH award letter if applicable
  • Accommodation confirmation

Visa documents

  • Residence permit application form
  • Consular fee receipt
  • Interview attendance at the handling mission

Intake timeline

September is the main intake. The Stipendium Hungaricum portal opens in November and closes in mid-January for the following September. Self-funded applications generally close between February and June depending on the university.

For SH: apply November to mid-January, interviews February to April, results in June, permit application immediately after, arrival late August. Self-funded runs 2 to 3 months faster end to end. Either way, start preparing documents in the autumn a year before you want to fly.

Work rights

Students may work up to 24 hours per week during term time and full time during official breaks, one of the more generous allowances in the EU. Budapest has the deepest English-speaking part-time market (shared service centres, hospitality); the university cities less so, but living costs there are also lower.

Post study options

Graduates can apply for a job-search residence permit of up to 9 months after finishing. Hungary's shared-services and manufacturing sectors (BMW, Audi, SAP hubs) hire English-speaking graduates, and a work permit follows a qualifying offer. Long-term settlement is possible but slower than in Western Europe; many SH alumni use Hungary as an EU launch pad.

Stipendium Hungaricum is the centrepiece: full tuition, a monthly stipend (about HUF 43,700 at bachelor's and master's level), housing contribution, and health insurance, awarded through a bilateral quota under which Bangladesh sends one of the largest cohorts in Asia. Selection weighs academic record, the motivation letter, and the university's own entrance interview. The portal opens each November; missing mid-January means waiting a full year.

Avoid these

Common mistakes

Small planning errors that often delay or weaken an application.

Missing the mid-January Stipendium Hungaricum deadline and paying self-funded rates for the same seat

Treating the consular interview casually — it filters harder than the paperwork does

Not verifying the current Hungarian consular channel for Bangladesh and losing weeks to a wrong submission

Choosing Budapest by default when the same program in Debrecen or Szeged costs 30% less to live through

Preparation risk

Refusal risk factors

Areas to prepare carefully. Strong preparation lowers your risk.

Incoherent answers about program choice or funding at the consular interview

Self-funded files with thin or freshly deposited bank balances

Mismatch between the SH application and the visa file (different programs or sponsors)

FAQ

Hungary student visa questions

Answers to common questions from Bangladeshi students.

Apply on the SH portal between November and mid-January, choosing up to two programs. Bangladesh participates through a bilateral agreement, and the Ministry of Education acts as the sending partner, so follow the nomination instructions in the call carefully. Universities then interview shortlisted applicants online between February and April, and results land around June. The award covers full tuition, a monthly stipend, housing support, and insurance. Strong grades matter, but a specific, credible motivation letter and a composed interview matter just as much.
