Admission
University admission process
Understand the admission path before you start the visa process.
Admission requirements
- Academic transcripts and certificates (12 years of schooling for undergraduate entry)
- IELTS or TOEFL for English-taught programs
- EJU score and often JLPT N2 or higher for Japanese-taught programs
- Statement of Purpose / research plan (graduate programs)
- Recommendation letters, especially for graduate and MEXT applications
- Proof of funds for the COE application
Choose your route
Decide between direct entry to an English-taught program, the EJU exam route for Japanese-taught undergraduate programs, or a Japanese language school first.
Shortlist universities
Match your subject and budget. National universities are the cheapest; check each program's language of instruction carefully.
Prepare tests
IELTS or TOEFL for English-taught programs. EJU and often JLPT N2+ for Japanese-taught programs. Some graduate programs interview instead.
Apply and pay screening fee
Submit documents on each university portal or by post. Japanese universities charge a screening/examination fee, usually ¥17,000 to ¥30,000.
Receive admission
Once admitted, the university applies for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) at the regional immigration bureau in Japan on your behalf.
Estimated cost

Tuition — private university
¥900,000 to ¥1,500,000
Living cost
¥90,000 to ¥145,000/month; Tokyo is highest
Screening / exam fee
per university
Visa fee
single-entry visa fee is modest; COE itself is free
National Health Insurance
income-based, students pay the minimum band
English test (IELTS or TOEFL)
EJU / JLPT (if required)
EJU is held in Dhaka twice a year
Document preparation
Flight
one way, Dhaka to Tokyo/Osaka
Emergency buffer
First year planning range
৳14L to ৳26L for the first year
Full masters degree
৳26L to ৳50L for a two year masters (self-funded)
A Japanese master's runs two years and a bachelor's four years. National universities charge a one-time admission fee (about ¥282,000) in the first year only. MEXT and other full scholarships can reduce the total cost to nearly zero for successful candidates, which is why Japan rewards early, well-prepared applications more than most destinations.

Visa process
Student visa process step by step
From admission letter to the final decision for the Student Visa (via Certificate of Eligibility).
University applies for COE
After admission, your university submits the Certificate of Eligibility application to Japanese immigration on your behalf. This takes about 1 to 3 months.
Receive COE
The university couriers the COE (or issues an electronic COE) to you in Bangladesh.
Prepare visa file
Complete the visa application form and gather your passport, photos, COE, admission letter, and financial documents.
Submit at Embassy of Japan, Dhaka
Apply at the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka, in some periods via an accredited agency. Processing usually takes about a week once the COE is in hand.
Receive visa and travel
Collect your passport, and receive your Residence Card at the airport when you land in Japan.
All students staying over three months must join Japan's National Health Insurance (NHI) at their local ward office after arrival. It covers 70% of most medical costs and students pay a low income-adjusted premium, typically around ¥20,000 to ¥30,000 per year.
The visa itself is issued quickly — usually within about a week — because the heavy vetting happens at the COE stage in Japan. Apply at the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka once your COE arrives. Check the embassy website for current submission procedure, as Japan periodically routes applications through accredited agencies.
For the COE, you or your sponsor typically show funds covering the first year — roughly ¥1.5 to ¥2 million equivalent — with a bank solvency certificate and an explanation of the money's source. Immigration cares about a credible, documented sponsor more than a single large deposit. Verify current expectations with your university's international office.

Intake timeline
April is the main Japanese academic intake. A growing number of English-taught programs also admit in September/October. Language schools admit in January, April, July, and October.
Start 12 months early. For April entry: apply to universities June–October the year before, COE processing November–February, visa and travel in March. MEXT embassy-track applications open around April–May a full year ahead.
Work rights
Up to 28 hours per week during term with the 'permission to engage in activity other than that permitted' stamp, requested at the airport on arrival or at immigration later. Full-time hours are allowed during long university holidays. Working over the cap risks visa cancellation.
Post study options
Graduates can switch to a Designated Activities job-hunting visa for up to 12 months after graduation. Once hired, you convert to an Engineer/Specialist in Humanities work visa. Japan's Highly Skilled Professional points system gives fast-track permanent residency to strong earners.
The MEXT (Monbukagakusho) scholarship is the flagship: full tuition, a monthly stipend of about ¥117,000 to ¥145,000, and airfare, applied for either through the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka (opens around April–May) or directly through universities. JASSO offers a monthly honors stipend, and most universities run their own tuition waivers of 30% to 100%.
Avoid these
Common mistakes
Small planning errors that often delay or weaken an application.
Applying to Japanese-taught programs without JLPT N2 — language requirements are enforced strictly
Missing the MEXT embassy-track deadline, which falls almost a year before enrollment
Underestimating the one-time admission fee (¥282,000 at national universities) in the first-year budget
Assuming the COE guarantees a visa — inconsistent financial documents at the embassy stage still cause refusals
Preparation risk
Refusal risk factors
Areas to prepare carefully. Strong preparation lowers your risk.
Unexplained large deposits or an unclear sponsor relationship in the COE financial file
Prior visa refusals or overstay history in any country left undeclared
Weak study plan that does not match your academic background

FAQ
Japan student visa questions
Answers to common questions from Bangladeshi students.
Yes, if you choose an English-taught program — Japan now offers hundreds of them, mostly at master's and PhD level and in a growing set of undergraduate programs (often called 'English-based degree programs'). IELTS or TOEFL covers admission. However, Japanese-taught programs open up far more universities and the lowest tuition, and they require JLPT N2 or higher plus the EJU exam. Even in an English program, basic Japanese transforms your part-time job options and daily life, so plan to study the language after arrival.
