Admission
University admission process
Understand the admission path before you start the visa process.
Admission requirements
- SSC and HSC transcripts (bachelor's) or bachelor's degree (master's)
- IELTS 5.5 to 6.0, MUET, or university English placement test — varies by institution
- Passport valid for at least 18 months
- Health declaration and later a post-arrival medical screening
- No blanket entrance exam — admission is document-based at most private universities
Shortlist universities
Compare public universities (cheapest), private universities, and international branch campuses (same degree as the UK/Australian parent).
Check English requirements
Many private universities accept IELTS 5.5–6.0, MUET, or their own English placement test. Branch campuses follow the parent university's bar.
Apply online
Apply directly on the university portal with transcripts and passport copy. Offer letters often arrive within 1 to 3 weeks.
Accept offer and pay initial fees
Pay the registration deposit so the university can open your EMGS Student Pass application.
University lodges EMGS application
The university submits your Student Pass application to Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), which you track online at educationmalaysia.gov.my.
Estimated cost

RM 9,000 to RM 20,000
Tuition — private / branch campus
RM 20,000 to RM 45,000; branch campuses at the top
Living cost
RM 1,200 to RM 1,900/month incl. shared housing
EMGS processing + insurance + medical
RM 2,500 to RM 3,600, paid once per pass
University application fee
some universities waive it
English test (if required)
Duolingo to IELTS; many accept internal tests
Document preparation
Flight
one way, Dhaka to Kuala Lumpur
Emergency buffer
First year planning range
৳8L to ৳16L for the first year
Full masters degree
৳12L to ৳28L for a 1.5 to 2 year masters
Malaysian master's programs run 1 to 2 years and bachelor's 3 to 4 years. Because living costs are low and one-time fees are small, the gap between first-year and full-degree cost is mostly tuition. Branch campuses charge the most but still cost roughly a third of studying at the parent campus in the UK or Australia.

Visa process
Student visa process step by step
From admission letter to the final decision for the Student Pass (via EMGS).
Receive offer letter
Secure admission first — the university, not you, initiates the Student Pass.
University submits EMGS application
Documents go to EMGS: passport pages, photo, offer letter, transcripts, and health declaration. Track progress percentage on the EMGS website or app.
Receive eVAL
EMGS issues the electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL), usually in 4 to 8 weeks. Check every detail against your passport.
Get Single Entry Visa
With the eVAL, obtain a Single Entry Visa (SEV) from the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka before flying.
Arrive and complete medical screening
Within 7 days of arrival, complete the EMGS medical screening at a registered clinic. The university then submits your passport for the Student Pass sticker.
Health insurance is mandatory and conveniently bundled into the EMGS package — you choose an approved insurer during the Student Pass application. Coverage renews with the pass each year. Keep the insurance card; private clinics in Malaysia expect it at reception.
Most of the process is online. Once EMGS issues your eVAL, you collect a Single Entry Visa from the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka (Gulshan) — check their site for current submission hours and fees. The Student Pass sticker itself is placed in your passport after you arrive and pass the medical screening.
Malaysia has no fixed embassy solvency figure like the UK, but universities and EMGS expect a bank statement plausibly covering first-year tuition plus roughly RM 1,500 per month of living cost. A clean 3 to 6 month statement in your or your sponsor's name is standard. Verify the current expectation with your university's international office.

Intake timeline
The two big intakes are February/March and September/October, but Malaysian private universities are unusually flexible — many programs admit in January, May, and August as well. Language and foundation programs roll monthly.
Start 4 to 6 months early — Malaysia is the fastest pipeline on this site. Apply and receive an offer in weeks 1–4, EMGS processing takes 4 to 8 weeks, then the Single Entry Visa takes about a week. Book the flight only after the eVAL is issued.
Work rights
Student Pass holders may work up to 20 hours per week only during semester breaks or holidays longer than 7 days, and only in permitted sectors (not entertainment venues). In practice, plan your budget assuming no part-time income — enforcement is strict and campus rules apply on top.
Post study options
Malaysia has no broad post-study work visa. Graduates who receive a job offer can switch to an Employment Pass if the role meets salary thresholds, and the Malaysia Tech Entrepreneur Programme (MTEP) suits founders. Many students use Malaysia as an affordable first degree, then move to Australia, the UK, or Canada for master's study with credit history and savings intact.
University merit scholarships of 10% to 100% tuition are common at private universities — ask admissions before you accept, not after. The Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) covers postgraduate study for strong applicants. Branch campuses offer their own high-achiever awards tied to HSC or bachelor's results.
Avoid these
Common mistakes
Small planning errors that often delay or weaken an application.
Paying an agent for the Student Pass — EMGS is designed to run through the university, and agent shortcuts cause errors
Flying before the eVAL is issued, which can mean being turned around at immigration
Missing the 7-day post-arrival medical screening window, which voids the pass process
Assuming part-time work will fund living costs — Malaysian rules only allow work during long breaks
Preparation risk
Refusal risk factors
Areas to prepare carefully. Strong preparation lowers your risk.
Passport validity under 18 months at the time of EMGS submission
Inconsistent name spelling across passport, transcripts, and application
Previous Malaysian immigration violations or a poorly explained study gap of many years
