Admission

University admission process

Understand the admission path before you start the visa process.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree relevant to the chosen master's program
  • IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL 80–90 for most programs (check per university)
  • GRE or GMAT for some business and technical programs
  • Statement of Purpose and CV
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificate
  • Two letters of recommendation for some programs
1

Choose your program

Browse Studyfinder.nl or directly on university sites. Most Dutch master's are 1 year; bachelor's are 3 years.

2

Check admission requirements

Verify IELTS, GPA, GRE or GMAT requirements per program — they vary significantly by university and subject.

3

Apply directly to universities

There is no central application system for master's. Apply on each university's own portal before their deadline (often January–May).

4

Receive admission and pay tuition deposit

Accept your offer and pay the tuition deposit to secure your place and trigger the visa file.

5

University applies for your residence permit (IND)

Most Dutch universities are recognised sponsors and apply to the IND for your permit. You receive an MVV entry visa via the embassy.

6

Collect MVV and travel

Collect your MVV from the Dutch Embassy and travel to the Netherlands. Finalise your residence permit in-country after arrival.

Visa process

Student visa process step by step

From admission letter to the final decision for the MVV Entry Visa + Residence Permit.

1

Receive admission offer

Accept the offer and pay the tuition deposit if required.

2

University submits IND application

Your university (as a recognised sponsor) applies to the IND for your provisional residence permit (MVV).

3

Receive MVV approval letter

IND approves and you receive notification. Your university or the embassy will inform you of the next step.

4

Collect MVV at Dutch Embassy Dhaka

Visit the Dutch Embassy in Dhaka with your approval letter and passport to collect the MVV sticker.

5

Travel to the Netherlands

Enter the Netherlands on your MVV within its validity period.

6

Finalise residence permit in-country

Register at your municipality and pick up your residence permit card from the IND desk within the Netherlands.

Insurance requirement

The Netherlands requires all residents, including students, to hold Dutch health insurance (basisverzekering) once they are registered. Arrange this shortly after arrival. Some universities offer group insurance plans.

Visa appointment guidance

The MVV is applied for by your university through the IND. You then collect it at the Dutch Embassy in Dhaka. The process is largely handled by the university — confirm the steps with your international student office after receiving your admission.

Proof of funds

You must show you have enough funds to cover tuition and living costs for your study period. IND sets the exact figure, which changes over time. Confirm the current requirement on the official IND website.

Intake timeline

September is the main intake for most programs. Some programs offer a February intake. Application windows open as early as October for the following September.

Start 10 to 12 months early. Research programs October–December, apply January–May (deadlines vary by program and university — some popular programs close in February), receive your offer April–June, and collect your MVV from the embassy July–August before a September start.

Work rights

Up to 16 hours per week during term time. During the summer months (June, July, August), you may work full time. Working more than 16 hours per week during term is a permit condition violation.

Post study options

The Orientation Year visa (zoekjaar) gives graduates 1 year after graduation to find a job or start a business in the Netherlands. This is one of the most generous post-study arrangements in Europe. If you find qualifying work, you can apply for a highly-skilled migrant permit for longer-term stay.

The Holland Scholarship provides €5,000 for the first year to non-EU students at participating Dutch universities. The Orange Tulip Scholarship covers tuition for some nationalities at selected universities. DAAD and Erasmus Mundus scholarships can also fund Netherlands-based programs.

Admission calendar

Application deadlines and session dates

Academic year: September to July. Dates are typical planning windows — confirm on official university pages.

September (main intake)BachelorMaster

Apply by (regular)

January 15 (competitive/popular programs, e.g., TU Delft, UvA data science); April – May for most other programs

September (first week)

Session ends

June – July

Visa timing

University submits IND application after you accept offer (May–June); collect MVV from Dutch Embassy July–August

Many popular Dutch master's programs close much earlier than expected — some TU Delft programs close in January, not April. Check your specific program immediately. The IND (residence permit) process is handled by your university — you collect the MVV sticker from the Dutch Embassy Dhaka about 4–6 weeks after the IND approves.

February (secondary intake — limited)Master

Apply by (regular)

November – December

Session starts

February

Session ends

June

Visa timing

University submits IND application December–January; collect MVV January

Only a few Dutch programs have a February intake. Confirm with your specific university and program.

Planning note: The Netherlands has no centralised application system for master's programs — apply directly on each university's portal. Study.EU and Studyfinder.nl are useful to find programs, but always apply on the official university website. The Holland Scholarship application is submitted through the university (not British Council) — deadlines vary per university, typically January–April.

Avoid these

Common mistakes

Small planning errors that often delay or weaken an application.

Missing early program deadlines — some popular Dutch master's close as early as January or February

Underestimating living costs in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, or The Hague

Not confirming the GRE or GMAT requirement per program — some require it, others do not

Assuming the IND permit process is instant — it takes several weeks

Preparation risk

Refusal risk factors

Areas to prepare carefully. Strong preparation lowers your risk.

Insufficient proof of funds for tuition and living costs

Incomplete university sponsorship documentation

Mismatched academic background for the chosen program

FAQ

Netherlands student visa questions

Answers to common questions from Bangladeshi students.

No. The Netherlands has over 2,100 degree programs taught entirely in English — one of the largest numbers in Europe. Most international students complete their entire degree in English. Some programs are Dutch-medium, but those will clearly state a Dutch language requirement. English is also widely spoken in everyday life, making adaptation easier.
