Admission

University admission process

Understand the admission path before you start the visa process.

Admission requirements

  • HSC with strong grades for bachelor's; a relevant bachelor's degree for master's
  • IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 (or TOEFL/PTE equivalent) depending on level

Auckland, Otago, Canterbury, Victoria (Wellington), Waikato, Massey, Lincoln, and AUT. Institutes of Technology (Te Pūkenga) offer cheaper applied degrees.

2

Apply directly on each university portal. Many charge no application fee, and offers typically arrive within 2 to 6 weeks.

3

Meet the English requirement

IELTS 6.0 for most bachelor's, 6.5 for most master's programs. TOEFL and PTE are accepted equivalents.

4

Some universities ask for a tuition deposit before issuing the receipt used in the visa application; others accept payment after visa approval.

New Zealand master's programs run 1 to 2 years; the popular 180-point taught master's finishes in 18 months. Bachelor's degrees are 3 years. The NZD 20,000 living requirement is per year of study, and the Post-Study Work Visa length depends on your qualification level, so a degree-level program is usually worth the extra cost over a cheaper diploma.

Visa process

Student visa process step by step

From admission letter to the final decision for the Fee Paying Student Visa.

1

Receive your Offer of Place

The unconditional offer from a New Zealand institution starts the visa file.

2

Apply online at Immigration NZ

Create a RealMe account and submit the Fee Paying Student Visa application with documents uploaded digitally.

3

Show tuition and living funds

Evidence of paid tuition (or funds to pay it) plus NZD 20,000 per year of living funds, with source documentation for recent deposits.

4

Complete medicals if asked

Applicants from Bangladesh generally complete an eMedical chest X-ray and medical examination at an approved panel clinic in Dhaka.

5

Receive the eVisa

Decisions typically take 4 to 8 weeks in peak season. The visa arrives electronically; there is no passport submission for most applicants.

Insurance requirement

International students must hold acceptable medical and travel insurance for the entire stay; universities bundle an approved policy (typically NZD 600 to 800 per year) into enrolment. You cannot start classes without it, and Immigration NZ checks it at the visa stage.

Visa appointment guidance

There is no embassy appointment. The entire application runs online through Immigration New Zealand, with only the medical examination done in person at an approved panel clinic in Dhaka. That makes file quality everything: with no interview to explain gaps, the documents must tell the whole story on their own.

Proof of funds

The published requirement is NZD 20,000 per year of living funds (about ৳14L) plus first-year tuition, either paid or available. The Funds Transfer Scheme through ANZ, where you deposit living funds into a New Zealand account released monthly after arrival, is the strongest way to present funds from Bangladesh. Verify the current figure on the Immigration NZ website; it was raised to NZD 20,000 in 2024 and can change again.

Intake timeline

February is the main intake, aligned to the Southern Hemisphere academic year, with a substantial July intake for most programs. A small November intake exists at some institutions.

Start 8 to 10 months early. For February entry: apply to universities by August or September, receive offers by October, lodge the visa by October or November, and fly in late January. July entry runs on the mirrored schedule.

Work rights

Up to 20 hours per week during term and full-time during scheduled holidays. Master's by research and PhD students may work unlimited hours. The minimum wage (around NZD 23 per hour) makes part-time work genuinely useful against living costs.

Post study options

The Post-Study Work Visa gives degree-level graduates up to 3 years of open work rights with no job offer required. Bachelor's graduates typically get 3 years; sub-degree qualifications get less or none, which is why the cheaper diploma route usually backfires. From skilled work, the Skilled Migrant Category and Green List roles lead to residence.

University scholarships for international students run NZD 5,000 to NZD 20,000, often automatic with a strong admission (Otago, Waikato, and Canterbury are notably generous). The government's Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships cover a small number of full awards for Bangladeshi applicants in development-related fields, with applications typically opening in February.

Avoid these

Common mistakes

Small planning errors that often delay or weaken an application.

Choosing a cheap sub-degree diploma and discovering it earns little or no post-study work visa

Ignoring the source-of-funds paper trail — INZ refuses files over undocumented recent deposits without an interview to explain them

Missing the medical appointment window and letting the application stall

Budgeting Auckland rents for Dunedin prices; Auckland costs 25-30% more than the student cities in the south

Preparation risk

Refusal risk factors

Areas to prepare carefully. Strong preparation lowers your risk.

Large unexplained bank deposits shortly before applying

A study plan that reads as a migration plan with no academic logic

Incomplete medical or identity documents that time out the application

FAQ

New Zealand student visa questions

Answers to common questions from Bangladeshi students.

Three numbers matter. Tuition runs NZD 24,000 to NZD 40,000 per year (roughly ৳17L to ৳28L). Living funds are a published, mechanical requirement: NZD 20,000 per year, about ৳14L, shown in your bank or transferred through the ANZ Funds Transfer Scheme. And the visa application fee itself is paid online — verify the current amount on the Immigration NZ website, as fees were restructured in 2024. All in, plan ৳28L to ৳42L for the first year before scholarships.
